Welcome to Roots to Harvest

The first time a person learns where food comes from; the life changing experience of serving those in need; the heat of a greenhouse; the dirt under your fingernails; the feel of a handful of red wiggler compost worms; the first seedlings… This is Roots to Harvest.

It's about learning, growing, inquiry & getting dirty. Young people connect with mentors & experts in the community to explore the food system from many different sides – production, distribution, access, culture, sustainability.

The Roots to Harvest project inspires young people in urban & rural Thunder Bay to engage in issues about food security within a science & technology framework. It is a YSTOP project funded by the Ontario Ministry of Research & Innovation.

Share your backyard! If you have a garden and want to share it with someone, or if you are looking for a space to garden, Sharing Backyards is for you! View the current map of backyards.

In the Schools

Each year we work with school groups between grades 6-12, providing hands on workshops, field trips and long term projects about food security, science and technology

Public Outreach

Roots to Harvest parters with local organizations to put on free public ranging from seed saving, worm composting, fermenting and more! Check out the Workshops page to find out more.

Urban Youth Garden

Ten youth, one acre and lots of veggies make for a very full summer! Our Urban Youth Garden employees ten lucky high high school students to become apprentice market gardeners for the summer.

Urban Youth Garden

The garden is being insulated by a light bed of snow... relaxing after a long summer of growing and regaining its energy for the spring and summer to come. Stay posted for spring events at the garden!
