There are no typical days at Roots to Harvest. One day we may be assembling new homes for a few pounds of red wiggler worms, another day may find us starting seedlings in classroom windows, sometimes we are in science labs burning different pieces of food or checking soil samples for nutrient levels and sometimes we may be driving the back roads of Thunder Bay looking for a farm to help out on! On whatever the day, we always have something fun planned for the folks we're working with.
Roots to Harvest works with youth between ages 12-18 in Thunder Bay and other Northern Ontario communities. During the school year we run workshops, develop lessons, match classes with university or community mentors, and go on field trips, all with the purpose of discovering the science and technology behind food security. In the summer we are busy working with our apprentice gardener team in our urban garden and on farms around Thunder Bay.

We partner closely with other organizations and groups in Thunder Bay to provide relevant experiences to the students, as well as to foster collaboration and the value of community experts. During the summer, Roots to Harvest depends heavily on the knowledge of our community experts to provide real and hands on learning experiences that teach about the complexities of growing food, raising animals and feeding communities.
We have a number of lessons and resources that are available for classes to implement on their own, or we can organize to come in and do it with your class. A number of our lessons and food security related videos are available through the Thunder bay District Health Unit's lending library. Contact Barb Murray at 625-5901 for lending library resources, or use our contact form to ask about lessons and workshops from Roots to Harvest.
