| Belluz Farms | Belluz Farms, in operation since 1946, is the largest fruit and veggie farm in the area. You can pick your own or find them at the market on Saturdays. Belluz Farms uses sustainable farming practices in the fields and the greenhouse. The Roots to Harvest summer crew learns about sustainable farming and larger scale farming. Jodi & Kevin also speak in some classrooms that Roots to Harvest works with, as well as tour groups around the farm during the school year. |
| Boreal Edge Farm | This is an amazing CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) Farm in Thunder Bay owned & run by Matt & April Baughman. If you want a share in the farm, contact them early! We work with Boreal Edge in the summer with our youth crew, learning about how they care for the fields and operate the CSA. |
| The Greenhouse Affect - Greenhouse for a Greener World | Our sista in gardening! These funky punks from the urban garden in 2008 wrote a grant, got the grant and now they're (about to) run the funkiest greenhouse in town! It's about youth connecting to food and getting some skills to grow it themselves. |
| Food Security Research Network | This is the umbrella organization that keeps the rain off of R2H. FSRN is a university project tackling food production and supply in northern and remote communities, wild foods, marketing local food, and developing learning gardens. They do it all so check them out! |
| DeBruin's Greenhouses | DeBruin's runs the only hydroponic greenhouses in Northern Ontario, growing the most delicious tomatoes all the way from May through October! Arjen has worked with Roots to Harvest to provide hands on learning for growing vegetables hydroponically. He builds amazing small scale hydroponic systems and is always willing to share knowledge to students! |
| Food Action Network | The Food Action Network is a collaboration of local organizations and individuals working together to address food security issues ranging from production to distribution to healthy diets. Roots to Harvest is a partner with the F.A.N, partnering to deliver workshops about food to the public throughout the year. |
| Lakehead University Environmental Lab | The Lakehead University Environmental Laboratory offers chemical analysis of soils, foliage, water and wastewaters. The laboratory supports both teaching and research at Lakehead University, offering access to production based analytical methods. This lab has analyzed plant samples for a wheat grass experiment done by grade 11 students at Churchill High school. |
| Lakehead University Greenhouse | The Lakehead University Greenhouse, run by Joan Lee, is used mostly by forestry graduate students to raise seedlings and investigate forestry issues that affect Northern climates. It is an incredible resource for the Roots to Harvest project. We bring classes to the greenhouse to raise different plants under different conditions, looking at the influences of light, water, nutrients etc. Joan also saves space every year for us to raise tomato plants for the community gardens in town. Thanks Joan! |
| Slow Food Superior | Slow Food Superior is the local chapter of Slow Food International. Slow Food promotes good, clean and fair food for everyone, encouraging taste education, biodiversity in food crops and traditional and peasant food. Slow Food Superior has been a great organization, highlighting local food issues in Thunder Bay, and they do this with Roots to Harvest participants too! |
