Through our work in the community, Roots to Harvest has seen the restorative and fulfilling effect that growing food and cultivating the soil has on people. In this vein, the Community Grower Program was conceived as a way to empower Thunder Bay area residents to build and maintain their own garden spaces. In partnership with the Thunder Bay Public Library, Roots to Harvest has developed instructional resources and purchased lending tools to facilitate library members to get more involved in their gardens. Members can check out tools for free at two different library locations across Thunder Bay (Waverley and Brodie).

Building on our experience and knowledge of healthy eating and cooking, Roots to Harvest runs weekly cooking programs at K.K.E.T.S (Kiikenomaga Kikenjigewen Employment and Training Services) and L.A.E.C (Lakehead Adult Education Centre). Working within the organizations and their kitchens, Roots to Harvest buys, plans, teaches and cooks with students to produce lunch once a week for staff and students at both schools. With an emphasis on interesting, nutritious, made-from-scratch meals using recipes developed by R2H, the programs have been a huge success and have become part of the core outreach programming of Roots to Harvest throughout the year.

The Superior Seed Producers are a group of local farmers and seed producers dedicated to breeding and developing regionally adapted and appropriate seed varieties to better encourage resiliency within the North Western Food system. Seeds are sold via online orders through the Superior Seed Producers Website as well as through consignment with Belluz Farm, Eco Superior and several other local vendors. Over the years Superior Seed Producers has partnered with Seeds of Diversity Canada and the Bauta Foundation to invest in key training and infrastructure which has allowed the group to increase their knowledge and better clean and save seeds.
