Roots to Harvest

Programs

Employment

Roots to Harvest provides employment skills training to young people and adults who are invested in increasing their employability in an environment that promotes community engagement and partnership, hard work, and core employment skills enhancement.  Participants are not required to have agricultural experience to participate, and will be immersed in and contribute to a community of people focused on food security, community building, and urban agriculture, in an environment that promotes personal support, and political awareness.

Outreach

Roots to Harvest engages with various communities throughout Thunder Bay using food and growing as common denominators.  We all need to eat, and we all need to ensure that we have secure sources for that food. Cooking programs and grocery store tours provided through Adult Education and Employment Skills Training programs enhance the knowledge and skills of adults using education to further the quality of their lives and increase their social determinants of health.  Gardening and agricultural tool libraries across the city make food security action in backyard and community gardens more accessible to everyone.

Education

Roots to Harvest provides educational programs to local schools through cooking programs in Foods classrooms, cultivating school gardens with students, and providing freshly prepared, regionally sourced school meals to students either monthly, or in the case of the Get Fresh Café, daily.  Roots to Harvest is able to transfer specific knowledge and lived experience of health sustainable food production directly to students in local schools, ranging from grades 1 to 12.
